The Community Foundation program, which wishes to develop the new Romanian philanthropic institutions, has now one year of activity. Community Foundations from Cluj Napoca, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Alba Iulia, Sfantu Gheorghe and initiative groups from Bucuresti, Iasi, Targu Mures and Cristuru Secuiesc, came to the "Imagining and Buildin the Future" Conference in order to build the basis for the next years.
5600 donors, 600 volunteers, 600000 ron coming from the communities and 100 finances summing up to 3000000 ron are just part of the numbers that sum up the first year.
More important than the numbers is the enthusiasm and the commitment of those who initiated these organizations and of those supporters that made possible their realizations.
Guests from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Great Britain and Slovakia, experts in branding, financial investments and social entrepreneurship came to the Community Foundation Conference.
The development of the community foundation in Romania would not have been possible without the financial support of the C.S. Mott Foundation, Romanian American Foundation and Trust for Civil Society in CEE, PACT Foundation and Partnership Foundation.

The students of the High School for the Visually Impaired, the High School for the Deaf, and C.R.D.E.I.I. Special School from Cluj-Napoca can finally enjoy new workshops and labs refurbished with the support of the Fund for Community Initiatives. With a total worth of USD 9,400, the Fund was created and consolidated after the first edition of the Swimathon swimming competition, organized in 2009 by Cluj Community Foundation (CCF). The closing event of the projects funded by CCF's Fund for Community Initiatives was held on Thursday, June 3rd , at the venue of the three Cluj-based educational establishments involved in the program."By consolidating the Fund for Community Initiatives, we demonstrated that people can rally for and support the needs of the community even in times of crisis... These projects are the result of the involvement in the creative resource mobilization mechanism offered by Swimathon of a great number of supporters -companies and individuals alike. Each contribution, however small, made a difference, so we will continue with the Swimathon this year too, in the same enthusiastic and creative spirit ", said Simona Serban, CCF Executive Director. As regards the High School for the Visually Impaired, the support went to the project "The Joy of Seeing!", picked by Cora Hypermarket, the company whose swimmer won the corporate race at the Swimathon. In this project, a visual perception training office was set up and equipped with specialized (ophthalmologic) devices, standardized evaluation tools and teaching and learning materials."Read and Write Right" is the project run by the C.R.D.E.I.I. Special School and it was selected by Reset Media, the company whose swimmer finished second in the corporate race at the charity swimming competition. In this project, a speech therapy office was set up, allowing professionals to work one-on-one with those 30 special students that suffer from serious or associated disorders (ADHD, hyperactivity). As a result, the new office will host rehabilitation activities combining Waldorf pedagogy-inspired therapy with curative therapy. As far as the High School for the Deaf is concerned, support was offered to the project "Pre-professionalization Workshop for Deaf Students", chosen by Brinel, the company whose swimmer came in third in the corporate race. Hence, a workshop that had last been upgraded 30 years before was finally refurbished, thus creating an appropriate working space for specific pre-professionalization activities. These are essential to the development of deaf children's motor and intellectual skills, influencing their future social and professional integration.

Cluj Community Foundation (CCF) has recently made a new round of grants for the community, with a total worth of USD 11,700. The money comes from SoftVision Fund, a designated named fund, created by the Cluj-based company SoftVision and managed by CCF. Thus, four projects were supported in the following fields of interest: animal welfare, children with special needs, the elderly, and education. The projects that received support were picked out of 20 project proposals for the above-mentioned fields in which the company takes an interest. Hence, "Noah's Ark" Animal Welfare Association was granted 3,700 US dollars to purchase a minivan, which will serve as a mobile clinic for those nearly 100 dogs in the care of the association (for different types of interventions). At the same time, the Maltese Relief Service from Cluj received USD 3,700 for the project "The Special Maltese Kindergarten for Children with Neuromotor Disabilities". The amount was used to outfit the kindergarten with equipment for gym, play and medical rehabilitation activities benefiting 20 children. The same amount was also given to the Theodora Project Charity Association for purchasing the materials needed to finish outfitting the dining hall of the home for the aged, as well as for buying medicines and sanitary supplies. At the moment, the home looks after approximately 90 elderly that will benefit from these improvements and purchases. Last but not least, CCF granted USD 700 from the SoftVision Fund to "Emil Racovita" National College to support the participation of a three-student team in a computer science competition - American Computer Science League - held in the US at the end of this month.

Cluj Community Foundation (CCF) finished the application selection process in the Scholarship Program, and as a result ten 8th graders from Cluj will get support all through the 2010-2011 academic year. The program will total nearly USD 6,000 from CCF's Scholarship Fund, established in 2008 and supported by the generosity of a foreign donor, Fred C. Robey. The ten CCF scholarship holders were selected from a total of 53 applications that presented various special needs, clear motivations and even examples of high performance. The amount of the scholarship is 70 dollars per month, to be paid for 9 months, between October 1st, 2010 and June 30, 2011. "The task of the selection committee was not an easy one. All of them have impressive stories and each one deserves a chance. As we have announced, we focused on the actual financial need and motivation, but we also decided to look for support for as many of these students", stressed Mariana Salagean, CCF Grants Manager. This means that financial resources will be sought for other 13 applicants, selected by the committee, through fundraisers organized by CCF. Each single case strikes a chord as some students come from families with a monthly income that hardly ever exceeds USD 35 per family member, and others have excellent academic results, special talents and interests but insufficient financial means to do something about them despite the fact that they are highly motivated. "Although I am a professional athlete, this hasn't stopped me from being an "A" student. I love to read and I find history so fascinating. Drawing is one of my passions: I took part in numerous painting competitions, and my favorite is glass painting, especially icon painting. Many times when I was offered the opportunity to travel abroad I had to say no because I didn't have the money although I really wanted to go .... I am working hard during practice and at school, and in the little time I have left I prefer to stay home and paint icons or to draw", reads a letter of intent from the application file of a Cluj Sports High School student, who dreams of becoming a champion athlete. This is just an example of the many cases that drew the attention of the selection committee and for which resources are being sought in order to provide support.
